BODY45 : MOST THINGS CHANGE

Not all photographs reveal their meaning clearly.

Even though it holds importance for me, I've never been able to get past the mystery of the moment to understand why this image captivates me.

So many obvious truths exist in this image, yet never hardly more than as clues to why I'd felt compelled to take the shot. Shoes chosen with intention, her bag secured behind a large, fat, soft suitcase, and a beauty gracefully carried through life.

I'd seen her many times throughout my years in DTLA - sometimes with bags, regularly alone, most always looking lost and a bit vulnerable, but clearly self possessed. And, I'd never felt compelled to take her shot, before...

...Perhaps it was the juxtaposition of her softness in the middle of the city, clouds and concrete on that particular day. Her long and searching gaze in stark contrast to the woman to her right, dressed dark, expressionless scan.

Perhaps it was the fact I'd seen her twice that day, on my way out and back. Perhaps it was the fact I'd never see her again after that day. A truth I never would have known before capturing her image... perhaps somehow I did. I'll never know.

I’m a Street Photographer from DTLA who believes that capturing truth requires the absence of me.

I’ve slept, worked, and lived in the streets of DTLA all my life.

Most recently, I lived in the center of the city, at 7th and Spring, and shot every single day for 8 years.

I shoot with at 23mm fixed lens, so I have to get close to my subjects. I’m not a sniper. I believe that if I can’t get close enough to catch the shot, I don’t deserve it.

My work is candid. My shots are unposed. My goal is to simply be present and distinctly attentive to the moments swirling around me with the single intention to capture any of an unfathomable amount of impossible alignments that go unseen every day.

To pull from my Genesis: We are stars. Expelled & dying flashes of light. Some named, held in awe. Some ignored, most unseen. An eternal cycle of peerless moments; the ephemeral beauty of simply being, burning, and dying before each other’s eyes.

Many of us go through life questioning our value. I hope that my work captures the fact that you are immense, powerful, and perfect every moment you are alive.

Thank you for being here.
