THE IMAGE : If you know me from 52BODIES, you know I usually don’t gravitate toward images where I or the camera are acknowledged. Instead, I pursue an approach that uncovers candid, unposed moments that reveal ephemeral alignments appearing and disappearing around us every second of every day.

I noticed this moment shaping up a couple of blocks away when I heard the foreman of a construction crew calling up to his men. The instant I realized there was a possibility the crew might line up, I sprinted to a spot in the street, directly under the foreman, where I laid down with my head against the edge of the sidewalk, looking straight up. Having such a high vantage point, this was easy for the crew to see happening. Also, looking down at their foreman, it was certainly impossible not to notice a guy lying flat in the street directly below them. This time I didn’t mind that I would be seen taking the photograph. The moment was quick, and the resulting image had such great energy that I instantly came to love it as one of my favorite DTLA RISING images; the last shot at the end of a great day that embodied a feeling of hope and unity in the city that didn’t always feel in harmony.

I’m a Street Photographer from DTLA who believes that capturing truth requires the absence of me.

I’ve slept, worked, and lived in the streets of DTLA all my life.

Most recently, I lived in the center of the city, at 7th and Spring, and shot every single day for 8 years.

I shoot with at 23mm fixed lens, so I have to get close to my subjects. I’m not a sniper. I believe that if I can’t get close enough to catch the shot, I don’t deserve it.

My work is candid. My shots are unposed. My goal is to simply be present and distinctly attentive to the moments swirling around me with the single intention to capture any of an unfathomable amount of impossible alignments that go unseen every day.

To pull from my Genesis: We are stars. Expelled & dying flashes of light. Some named, held in awe. Some ignored, most unseen. An eternal cycle of peerless moments; the ephemeral beauty of simply being, burning, and dying before each other’s eyes.

Many of us go through life questioning our value. I hope that my work captures the fact that you are immense, powerful, and perfect every moment you are alive.

Thank you for being here.
