“High Hopes” is the extraordinary companion image to my 1/1 shot “Hope and Fear” which was featured in a full-page shot in Cosmopolitan Magazine, 2022 Issue 3. Both images feature the word hope in their titles because of the persistence and dedication that was necessary to capture something so unique on a day when there was little hope of finding success.
On this summer afternoon in Arizona, I intended to stay home seeing very few prospects of capturing anything of significance. But I pushed through my doubt and drove towards a dying storm near the community of Arivaca. I arrived too late for the main show but found out that the best was saved for last. This lightning "crawler" perfectly completes the balance and symmetry with the rainbow, while leading lines from the hills slowly draw the eye's attention to the bottom where a barrel cactus desperately awaits the rain showers. To top it off, this magical scene was complete thanks to a dreamy magenta-toned sky at sunset. This is a single shot and not a composite.
